CURRENTLY BUILDING: NOCTURNE, FOR REAL THIS TIME

Michael
Heavener.

Bookkeeper by day. Builder by night.

By day I run accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and reconciliations that have to be right. By night I make agent systems, Linux machines, and music software do real work. Either way, I publish the evidence, including the failures.

SELECTED WORK

● ACTIVE BUILDPYTHON · AGENTS · ABLETON

NOCTURNE

A Python agent system that writes music for Ableton Live: an intent interpreter, an arrangement planner, a DAW bridge, sqlite-backed memory, and telemetry on every run.

Its first honest audit found the feedback loop was theatre: the planner never listened. That finding, evidence, root cause, and the fix now in build, is the most useful thing it has produced so far.

● PUBLICPYTHON · LINUX · STDLIB ONLY

netwatch

Socket observation for Linux, rebuilt from /proc first principles instead of shelling out to the tools that already exist, to learn what they actually do.

Hex-table parsing, inode-to-process joins, untrusted-input sanitisation, deliberate SIGPIPE handling, and a test suite that runs against a fake /proc tree. No root. No dependencies.

THE BOOKKEEPING RECORD

Bookkeeper / Admin Assistant Bluebird Composting AP/AR · biweekly payroll & timekeeping for ~25 · ~$300K receivables on a rolling 45-day cycle · reconciliations · legacy-data cleanup across QuickBooks, Excel, Sheets & POS 2025 to 2026
Front End Supervisor / Bookkeeper Mariano's, Chicago Supervised 3–6 per shift · daily bookkeeping · cash reconciliation across 3–6 drawers · deposit prep 2023 to 2025
Team Member Target, Chicago Front-of-store operations at scale, accuracy under volume, every shift 2020 to 2023

Six-plus years of clerical and financial-office work. The numbers reconcile, or I find out why. That standard doesn't clock out.

Now

BUILDING IN PUBLIC

Rebuilding NOCTURNE's planner so feedback changes the music, measurably. The build gets written up as it ships, a few times a week, on LinkedIn and X.

Open to bookkeeping, administrative, and customer-operations roles in Sacramento and the Bay Area. Fastest way to reach me: michael@heavener.co.

About

SACRAMENTO, CA

I'm a bookkeeper and builder in Sacramento. The day job is financial operations: the books, the payroll, the reconciliations. The night work is small systems that do real work: agent software, Linux machines, and the tooling that connects them. Both run on the same standard, and I publish the evidence, including the failures.

  1. 01Build itWorking software over plans about software.
  2. 02Test it against realityHashes, receipts, and live data, not vibes.
  3. 03Publish the findingEspecially when the finding is "it was fake."

Right now: NOCTURNE, the systems underneath it, and a daily fluency practice aimed at junior and apprentice software roles, alongside the bookkeeping and administrative work I've done for six-plus years. Reach me at michael@heavener.co, find the work on GitHub, or the person on LinkedIn.
